Not a chance that dream would be anywhere close to reality.

We couldn't even shell out 7m for Dempsey :(

Sir Alex Ferguson says the number one jersey at Manchester United is Anders Lindegaard's to lose, with David de Gea forced to wait his turn for a return to the first-team.

The 22-year-old Spanish stopper has struggled to get to grips with life in the Premier League, after arriving at Old Trafford in a big-money move from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011.

De Gea came in with the intention of succeeding Edwin van der Sar as Manchester United's first-choice goalkeeper for many years to come, but is yet to fully convince Ferguson that he is a long-term solution between the sticks.

As a result, Lindegaard has been handed an opportunity to stake his claim for a regular place in the side, having been favoured for the Red Devils' last four games in domestic and European competition.

And, as long as the Danish international maintains his recent high standards, Ferguson sees no reason to keep rotating, even after the club shipped three goals in Saturday's 4-3 victory over Reading at the Madejski Stadium.

"Anders has done well. It's one of those situation where there is no actual reason to leave Anders out in terms of form," explained the Manchester United boss. "Hopefully David understands that at the moment. But there is no long-term issue.

"I really think that creates consistency. That's why I've kept Anders in on Wednesday night (against West Ham). I could easily have changed it again but Anders has done nothing wrong.

"They're both good goalkeepers. I'm going along with Anders at the moment because he is not letting me down."
