Mainz's Baumgartlinger is off to Leverkusen. Every year Mainz is performing but come the end of the season, they lose their key players. Discouraging to see, really.

yep, it's a really big loss. not only has he been our captain, he has been excellent in organising our midfield and his workrate is out of this world. karius (gk) will most likely join liverpool and malli (om) will leave the club too. as you already mentioned though, it's not a new situation for us. what's really bad is that we lost our manager (heidel) to schalke. he was the mastermind behind replacing all those wonderful players that left our club with cheap but talented players that fit our philosophy and wage budget.

it's a small club's fate these days - at least here in germany where foreign investors can't just buy a club and invest billions into transfers and infrastructure (which i generally am a firm supporter of but it's obviously a huge competitive disadvantage if you compare it to other leagues like england, spain or italy)...

Well if he does excel next season or two for whatever reason, it's just a phone call away from BUYern's Bench.

well it really depends on what happens with kramer and bender (who are both more talented players in my opinion). bender for example has been injured for the majority of the season and kramer hasn't exactly performed to his potential this season either. other than that they have ramalho who played cb for most of the season and frey who's certainly a talented young player but not really the defensive work- and warhorse that baumgartlinger is. and considering leverkusen will play cl next year, they certainly need solid players like baumgartlinger that can fill that defensive role and deal with some pressure. i would not be surprised if he gets plenty of playing time. sure, he won't be the captain, maybe not even the player to organise the midfield but i can certainly see why they signed him...
