also the other way around, with players complaining about having too much competition and then wanting to leave even after I sell a couple of players

The players are rated on a reputation worlwide and home reputation, the brought player should match those.
Also the personal relations between players do matter, if you got a benchwarmer that has tutored (hence developped an affinity towards) a first team one, he might be upset if he leaves. Personal convo is the solution here.
