I haven't reported much from Mallorca lately because nothing too big has been going on... we've continued to play horribly and we are still in the low end of the table, far from promotion.
2 weeks before the winter break our manager was finally sacked, and was replaced Pepe Gálvez (a homegrown former player of our club that was once one of Spain's most promising talents until injuries ruined him). Gálvez is inexperienced as this is his first manager job, but he has the fans support because of his past as a player. The team has improved in playstyle with him, but results haven't been that great (1 win, 2 draws, 1 defeat).
This week something big has occurred. Robert Sarver (american billionaire and owner of NBA franchise Phoenix Suns) has bought the 75% of the club (the remaining 25% still belongs to Classen, who will remain as our president for now) and has injected 20M€ into the club. That's a lot of money for us, but it's unknown how much of that will be used on transfers. He is bringing in people that have worked with him in other enterprises, and people he trusts personally... so we will probably change manager again soon. Steve Nash is now part of the club's board
Let's hope this finally works out. This year will be our 100th anniversary, so there's a lot of pressure to not fuck up atm.
So, as expected, the new owners have brought a new manager. Gálvez has been sacked (the owners have offered him a job at Vancouver Whitecaps, which is a MLS club they own; Gálvez is considering it atm), and has been replaced by Fernando Vázquez.
Vázquez has managed many clubs in Spain. He usually achieves immediate success, but after a while his teams either stop progressing or become inconsistent, which is why in his carrer he never went beyond managing top half of the table teams. It's surprising that he joined us, because he shouldn't have too much trouble finding a job in Primera.
He already managed Mallorca in the 1999-2000 season. First half of the season was great, but the second one wasn't all that good and his contract wasn't extended after finishg 10th and being raped 6-2 in EL quarters against Galatasaray, who would later win the tournament. Overall he did a decent job dispite the club having higher ambitions at the time (dispite having quality players like Eto'o, Lauren, Ibagaza, Tristán, etc the team wasn't even his because he took over in september).
Looking forward to this. This season is pretty much done for us (we're 14 points away from promotion playoffs), so he has signed until 2017 with the objective of preparing the team for a promotion next year.
