He's not really employed as a real winger though. When he was hired at Madrid he literally said that he prefered players like Kaká on the wing over players like Robben. According to him, when attacking, next to the sideline is the worst place where you can lose the ball, so he doesn't want players playing there.

He says that counter attacks coming from the side are more dangerous because normally there are more players far away from the sidelines that can stop a counterattack that doesn't start off from the side. He says that, since he has posesion, most of the goals he concedes come from counter attacks, so he wants to make them the least dangerous possible, and according to him the best way to do that is to play without wingers.

I don't agree with him but that is how he sees things. He has always been adamant about this, so I don't think he will ever change.
