Don't know much about soccer, only watched the last few WCs. What I've seen has created one question in my mind though:
Why would the game be worse if offsides was allowed? Way I see it:
Anytime a team had possession, the defense would throw a player way back as a cherrypicker. This would force the team with control to also throw a player back there to watch him. This would spread the players out some, alleviate some of the cluster in front of the goal. It would lead to more counterattacks, more scoring and more excitement.
So why would allowing offsides ruin the game?
It requires teams to adopt offensive and defensive strategies, like playing/overcoming the offside trap and keeping a defensive line
Without offsides teams would revert to playing long balls from one box to the other with little interconnecting play
