I'm sorry fender, but that's just a load of bullshit. If you call the Krul for Cilessen substition a mistake, you should read up a bit more on why he did it and why he didn't tell cilessen before the match.
To start off cilessen has never stopped a penalty in his professional career.
Secondly, it wasn't told to Cilessen beforehand because it would have messed with his focus on the game.
I think some people just didn't like the keeper switch because of the way krul behaved against the opponent penalty takers, but he didn't break any rules with his behavior.
this actually confirms why i think overall it backfired...
and although i didn't like krul's behaviour at all (i think it was unsportsmanlike) that's not why i disliked van gaal's sub. i said it even BEFORE the penalties (look at the time):

that's what i don't like about van gaal. instead of bringing on a fresh man in extra time he wants to make the "hero-sub". if it works he can claim it was his decision that brought the win, if not he'll say penalties is 50/50, badluck...
he's a great manager but sometimes his ego is bigger...
and basically what happened is: it worked once but van gaal put himself in a position where he would have to sacrifice one sub if it's even remotely possible there will be penalties again (and to be quite honest, the holland - argentina match looked like it after just 10 minutes) or let a keeper face the situation he already showed he doesn't trust with it...
just to clarify: i think van gaal is a great manager (much better than löw for example) and holland had a great run, i even hoped they'd made it to the final but this situation was stupid and i think van gaal's ego cost you a better shot at the final. that being said, it was most likely his genius that put you in the position to have a shot at all...
