Well, he has been utter garbage

Some of the players he has signes haven't worked well.

The 3 coaches that took over the job during his spell haven't been particularly good.

He has been stubborn about not signing a CB until this year (and he signed injury prone Vermaelen who still hasn't played, and overpaid for Mathieu).

he has missed the chance to sign a few players; most recently Marco Asensio, and it was particularly hurtful because he noow signed for Madrid.

He kept Neymar's overprice secret.

He signed kids ilegally and got the club banned from signing until 2016.

etc

obviously the decision to mantain the bann until 2016 gave him the final blow

Why appoint an ex footballer as a club director anyway ? No disrespect to footballers but I doubt he was the best candidate for the job

Well, there are plently of examples of former footballes that went on become great director's of football.

Normally clubs want someone who knows the world of football from the inside, and has experience and understanding of how the club works and what philosophy it follows.

Appointing someone known and respected by fans also helps.

It's the same with coaches. Most of the time they are former football players. Obviously knowing how to play doesn't mean you will know how to manage a team, but you will have at least the experience and knowledge of how things work in football and that's what club presidents will often go for.

A well-known figure is always usefull in those positions. Its one thing to be approached or dine by/with a legend than with just an average joe.

That being said,

Luis Enrique’s Barcelona cannot find spaces, let alone exploit them.
