I agree Mourinho is past it, but he still managed to win the league with Chelsea just a few years ago. United would have lost that game with any manager today because their defense is a mess. Mourinho has to take responsibility in his choice of player recruitment but today they weren't playing defensive or not creating enough chances.

they are not as good as a team with that spending should be, but as fender pointed out, players like lindelöf arent so bad
he was a tank at the world cup

its true that there was no bus parking, but the team is not compact at all
there is no pressing and when attackers lose the ball you can see like 5 united players still parking in their own half at times

and the amount of individual mistakes clearly shows that the whole team has no confidence, the dressing room must be a mess

You need stability. Mourinho puts up so many different starting 11 it's crazy.

This match, he played 4-3-2-1 with Smalling and Jones as central defenders. First match for them.
Other two matches he played 4-3-3. Bailly and Lindelöf together.
He has played Mata- Rashford - Sanchez one match, Martial - Lukaku - Mata one match and this match it was Lingard - Lukaku - Pogba altho not exactly 4-3-3.
He has played three different right backs. First Darmian, then Young, now Valencia.
If you want to suceed, you need some stability. You need to play your formation in the preseason, get everyone set, figure out the starting 11, and go.

Lukaku’s lack of ruthlessness and clinical finishing is starting to really show in a not good way.

Really like him and love his attitude and effort. He so far hasn’t shown that factor that matters when leading the line for United. This is twice in two games he shanked sitters to put it at 1-0 and allow for control of the game. This happened a fair bit last season too.

I don’t see anything that would suggest he’d singlehandedly drag United back with a hattrick after being down 0-2 like Rooney did when the title race was in full swing (vs West Ham in 2011) or snatch United extra points all over the place with crucial goals and timely hattricks like RvP (2012-13 entire season). Rashford and Martial have showcased this ability to control important games by themselves at times, but alas that front 3 does not seem to work somehow.
