so whats the point of VAR then

The standard for overturning the referee's original decision is that there has been a "clear error", sometimes expanded to "clear and obvious error".

e/ The VAR have provided further information regarding the decision to chalk off Mata’s goal. Apparently, the lines we saw on the coverage (which looked wonky) were not the official lines used to come the decision. Even then, having seen the correct line, only Mata’s knee was debatably offside. Very, very marginally. Bit of a mess.
