If anything, he is replacing Sahin at the beginning. Any injury replacement for Alonso and Özil. He certainly hasn't the skillset to play the defensive part, and make all the dirty work. Rather the same position as Alonso.

But since they are playing farmers a lot, u could line up Alonso/Modric depending on the opponent.
