Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has said it will be "very difficult" for midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger to play for the club again.

Schweinsteiger, 32, who won 120 caps for Germany, has trained alone and with the under-23s since Mourinho took charge in the summer.

Schweinsteiger said on Wednesday he "will be ready if the team needs me".

Mourinho said: "We have five players for two positions. It's very difficult that an opportunity will arrive."

World-record signing Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini started in midfield for United in last Friday's Premier League win over Southampton, while Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick are also in the squad.

Schweinsteiger, who signed a three-year contract in July 2015 under Mourinho's predecessor Louis van Gaal, has said that United will be his last club in Europe.

Mourinho said on Friday that he had "no problem" if Schweinsteiger chose to stay at the club despite not playing.

"I cannot answer for him. It's his life. It's his career," said Mourinho.

"He has a contract and has the right to make that decision to stay. That's not a problem for us."

Not the best of news, hopefully he gets a chance in the Europa League and does well.

I don't get how people get hellbent on some player they like not playing. I just want to see the best players on the field.

He was still quite good for Germany at the Euros.

No change from the last week.

Darmian doesn't even make the bench.

true, but müller sucking doesn't make schweinsteiger display any better.

schweinsteiger should even made the squad. 1 year injured, has played less competitive football than pretty much anyone. dude is just finished. he is just 32, but his body is more like 40. and i doubt he cares much anymore, if you believe the british newspaper. flying around the world, watching tennis instead of working hard on his comeback. lost any respect in the locker room, if the rumors are true

making him captain on his last legs was the worst decision ever, because performance wise he shouldn't even be near the squad, let alone starting 11. at least he retired on his own (sigh of relief), else there was no way löw would drop him ...

there are many things i believe:
- that germany didn't really need him anymore and that he didn't get into our euro squad based on performance? absolutely.
- that united can do without him? sure.

what i don't believe, however, is that he's not behaving like a professional and not doing everything to be the best player he can be at this point and also that he lost the respect of his teammates (what is that rumour about? any sources?) or his leadership qualities. i don't believe that for a second unless you can PROVE it to me - and that's not because i'm such a huge schweini fan or anything along those lines, i'm not. but it would be completely out of character for him, he has always had an extremely professional attitude and work ethic. i find it somewhat ridiculous that you (aren't you a buyern fan?) have so little respect for him and what he has done for our national team...
