I think it's a big mistake on Man Utd's side. Mourinho is a good manager and will probably bring some short term success to the club, but his ways require that the club adapts to him and not the other way around. In a club with such a long history, tradition and a culture of its own like Man Utd, this won't work.

The fact SAF didn't want him is already something that doesn't bode well. I really doubt he will last more than 3 years.

Well, I woudn't be so optimistic about it.

And if he has changed (which I doubt), I'm not sure that would be a good thing. He has achieved succes by shaping the clubs he worked for in whichever ways he deemed necessary; if he doesn't do that then he will be turning away from the philosophy that made him a succesful manager (also the only philosophy he has any experience in following as a manager), making his signing pointless.

We'll see, he's at a stage of his career where he'd like to finally settle down for a bit longer than 2-3 years.

The way he manages his team is sustainable long term, providing he doesn't fall out with the players, he should be fine if he's allowed to bring his own players rather than some sort of DoF or transfer committee making transfers for him.
