you seem to be completely oblivious to what hummel's job is in dortmund's team. and even without that knowledge, just by watching ONE single dortmund game you would HAVE to see that he's their main man initiating basically every single attack. when your teammates play ridiculously bad passes directly into your opponent's feet you're caught out of position - happens to hummels as well as it happens to boateng, beckenbauer or maldini. and being the main man in defense doesn't mean you're responsible for every challenge, every tackle - no, it also means delegating and organising.
