It's garbage, mostly because 3rd placed teams qualify and teams go for the draw rather than the win.

this. i don't understand how ppl don't get it. just look at some of the matches and some of the teams qualifying, just look at the statistics... so far, the goal average (1.92 per game) is the second lowest in the history of the euros...

also, it added some additional elements of randomness and disadvantages for some teams just based on their initial group draw: playing the last group matches at the same time (which obviously still makes sense) was somewhat undermined by 3rd place teams of different groups competing against each other.
furthermore, the added round means that some teams that won their group get to face teams that came 3rd while others have to play teams that came second. some teams that finished 2nd get to play other 2nd placed teams while others have to play group winners...

don't get me wrong, i sure love the little football fairytales that happen (like iceland, hungary, ireland...) - but it's not like that was impossible with the 16 team tournament (greece 2004, russia 2008...)
like i said even before the qualification round started, this was a stupid decision, purely based on the desire to make more money from the tournament. giving teams an incentive to play for a draw rather than a win is always bad...

Germany 1-0 Northern Ireland (that's a fucking success story for them imo)
Spain struggled to beat Czech 1-0...

both these games were onesided as fuck, i don't see how you came to the conclusion they played "amazingly well" - they only tried not to concede too many goals, praying that the stupid mode will keep them in the tournament. that's EXACTLY what leads to teams crowding their boxes with 10 players and low scoring overall...

Should have a 34 man group stage with 32 going through just so those 2 that are left out can play for a "we're not the shittest team here" trophy.

agreed

the northern ireland coach was quite hilarious in an interview after the match "our plan worked quite well except the goal"
so the plan was to allow half a dozend 100% chances while not having a single shot themselves

I think some are placing far too much emphasis on the group stage.
In my opinion, the only lame thing is teams qualifying basically after round 1, Italy beat Belgium and at that point it was all but guaranteed they would advance, add on a late winner against Sweden and there wasn't even a point to show up against Ireland.

Because it's over two thirds of the games?

Like I said in some other thread, 24 would only work imo if they used the 1982 WC format, with 24 -> 12 -> semis (or they could also do 24 -> 12 -> 6 -> final, I guess)

Well for the guys who don't like underdogs mostly the home nations. You won't have to wait for long before they get knocked out.

Sorry but this format is completely fine and involves more international games which I'm in favour for. The odd years waiting for the club seasons to start are fucking boring.

Don't get hostile with me zark, I gave you the point... but a great elimination round can make this tournament special and it's already set up as such with some great match ups guaranteed to happen

36 games to eliminate 8 team..

can anyone add the team-values of the left and right side of the schedule? should be like at least 5 times higher on the right....
