before that you basically had 2 (or even 3) german national teams. West Germany, East Germany and some even considered Saarland as a self declared national team too.
After the 40's, they were basically not allowed to play actually. It lasted long, the Nazi reputation followed them everywhere. The country was devided, shit was bad.
The wall collapsed, germany grew again, so did sport. The West/East/Saarland formed a team, and you basically get this now.

(actually many even centuries ago, just like your homeland has ethnic diversity)
but let's look at west germany:

there were millions of ethnic turks (and others) in germany well before 1989 and plenty already born there
plus germany has accepted many refugees over the years
