i think van gaal's mistake was his "hero-sub" of tim krul the match before... i said it then that i don't like it and i still don't...
sure, it looked good and he got his praise for it but it might have backfired yesterday... cillessen was not amused vs. costa rica, he obviously was not informed this would happen before the game.
and you never know what something like this can do to a player mentally. i think from a psychological point of view, holland and cillissen went into yesterday's penalty shootout with a huge disadvantage.
could still have gone either way, there is always quite some luck involved but this was true for their first penalty shootout when everyone admired van gaal's genius...
I'm sorry fender, but that's just a load of bullshit. If you call the Krul for Cilessen substition a mistake, you should read up a bit more on why he did it and why he didn't tell cilessen before the match.
To start off cilessen has never stopped a penalty in his professional career.
Secondly, it wasn't told to Cilessen beforehand because it would have messed with his focus on the game.
I think some people just didn't like the keeper switch because of the way krul behaved against the opponent penalty takers, but he didn't break any rules with his behavior.
