What exactly did Xhaka do that caused Bernardo to lose both of his feet at the same time?

I'm not arguing that there wasn't contact because he clearly tugged some jersey, but Bernardo diving forward while "losing" his footing after a jersey tug and bare minimum contact to his left knee is disgraceful....

VAR is good but players are going down easier than ever now knowing that like 90% of the time, VAR will overturn the slightest of touches

Because our refs/var are shit, and if players don't hit the deck when people yank shirts, you don't get the pen.

It was a pen in my view. Xhaka is an idiot.

i'm a bit torn on this. the initial contact was obviously not enough to go down like that, and neither was the shirt pulling by itself. then again, you can't really complain if the ref gives it straight away, even though i personally would not have. having it overturned through VAR would certainly annoy me, since not giving a penalty was definitely not a wrong decision, but i also don't think it's an egregious mistake to do so. unfortunate for arsenal, and it made everyone involved (ref, xhaka, silva) look bad imo.
