The fans abusing him on social media might not even be Arsenal fans, they could just be random trolls. Everyone gets it.
While I don't support booing a player during a match, as captain you should rise above it and not react. If you do end up reacting then come out and apologise to the fans for throwing the captain's armband and walking off the pitch at a snail's pace. You can still apologise sincerely for that while maintaining that the fans who booed you off were in the wrong.
He's not even a top player or deserves to be captain. If I was an Arsenal fan now I'd want the captaincy to be stripped and him sold in January.
I get his response tbh, he's a man of respect and he apologizes vs the fans who have braincells and he refuses to apologize to the ones that don't.
He made a big mistake last match, but so did the fans. It was unrespectful behaviour looking back at it.
