I haven't commented yet because I feel you guys going to judge it as "he is a PSV supporter, ofc he says it wasn't that bad"

In my eyes it was just very unlucky, but a fair tackle. Somewhat hard but if he didn't broke his leg nobody would have looked twice. You've got to admid, these kind of tackles happen every weekend in the BPL. I'm not a referee nor do I know the rules well enough to comment if it either should be awarded a card or not. I read very mixed reactions everywhere. I checked the English stream to hear what they had to say. One said it was a fair challenge but it seemed a bit hard. Other called it unlucky but it's a contact sport and it can happen. Here on the Dutch tv they said, it's hard it was a fair tackle with no intention to play the man, he could have gotten a yellow since you come in with the possibility to injure someone. And if this tackle were to be made somewhere on the midfield you would most definitely have gotten a card. So everyone is a bit fuzzy on what a referee should do here, bare in mind. They have seen the tackle from alle possible angle at all possible speeds and they don't even know. How should a referee judge this decently in a split second decision. I think he could have went with all possible options. Furthermore, there wasn't one United player that complained about that tackle, that says something too. If players feel that something is misjudged they usually allmost kill the ref.

Thoughts please.

it was an unvelievably brutal and reckless challenge with both legs
zero fucks given
in germany we call it "scissors" doesnt exactly fit in english but i guess its understandable
every guy who plays football knows that you can crush your opponent with that

for trying to stop a player in this situation its more than enough to use your right leg
if you foul him then he will just fall over without injury

sry bro it was a disgrace

wasn't a straight red. Hard tackle, but spot on, shaw was just unlucky to be caught with foot on ground/didn't jump.
Not even a yellow.

Hmm here is a scissor when the other leg closes to catch the attacking player on purpose, this wan't that now was it.

Another case in point. Smalling came off with a yellow what was an intentional foul on Guardado, no intention to play the ball what so ever. I don't hear anybody about that.

i think you make a fair point here. it certainly looked like a somewhat rough tackle but if not for the injury, no one would have complained too much about it. however, the injury is a fact and due to the follow through and contact with the 2nd leg you could also describe it as a two footed challenge if you wanted to. at least a fould should have been called and a yellow card would have been the "correct" decision imo but yeah, i have the benefit of multiple angles, zoom, slow motion and hindsight so it's easier for me (and all of us) to say than it was for the ref.

it certainly did not look like it was an intentional career ending, keane style foul or something but i do understand that united fans are complaining, i would too if it was one of our players...
and i feel for the guy, hope he gets well soon...

Did guardado suffer a broken leg?

Foul or no foul he broke the guys leg. You shouldn't be able to just get away free for that.

idk why was there even an argument. people can blame shawcross tackle on ramsey few years ago and refused to blame that hector guy for this reckless tackle.
a proper way to dispose shaw of possession would be to get infront of him and not heck the boy down sideways. it was deliberate, reckless and full of malice. the boy will recover slightly faster than most since hes only 20 but it was disgusting to watch.

The rule isn't "did he break something" "but was there an intention to play the ball or the man"

I think the other problem lies, if the ref had given a yellow, he should have given a penalty too. And then the shit really had hitted the fan since "it was a tackle on the ball blabla" I felt like it was hard and a yellow too, but then my earlier pointed out problem arrose. And if you judge this as a two legged challenge I do get it, but where should his leg had been? It was not stretched and behind him, I couldn't really see anything wrong with it becides that it hitted a planted Shaw.

I know what the rule is. I'm saying how it should be, not how it actually is.

i don't think the severity of an injury should influence the evaluation of a foul. the same type of tackle or challenge could have different outcomes depending on which player you perform them against...
sometimes it's just bad luck you get a horrible injury from a relatively harmless tackle, sometimes you get away without any injury from a horrible tackle although the player was just trying to hurt his opponent...
