great result for atlético. a bit lucky i think, arsenal was the slightly better team tonight, but not completely undeserved. despite being a man down (thanks to the ref), they managed to find their defensive shape and did not give arsenal too many clear cut chances to score...

Both yellows imo. Correct call

while i agree that both situations can be considered bookable fouls (and that it indeed was stupid of the player), you can't just ignore the context while evaluating the situation:

- first of all, those were his only two offences.
- secondly, it's very early in the match and sending a player off obviously is a very impactful decision - the ref easily could have issued a stern last warning, which is the usual (and correct) way to treat these kind of situations.
- thirdly, the ref seems to have different standards for different players, otherwise bellerin should have been booked as well.

if you consider all this (which really should not be difficult for a veteran football fan) and not just look at it with a simplistic 'possible yellow, so he can't complain' attitude, you'll inevitably come to the conclusion that it was very harsh and unlucky for atlético.

which is completely ok obviously, i can't and don't expect you to read every single essay i type here, but i'd love to read your opinion considering the points i made... don't you think these aspects should be considered?

I think the first yellow should have stood.

The second foul should have been a talking to and put on a final warning. It ruined a potentially exciting game.

So I agree with you.

i never understood the "its so early in the game" argument
that moron committed two yellow worthy fouls in record time

the decisive point for me and maybe the ref, if he did see it as i did
the player doesnt make the slightest effort to take his foot back, went through with the challenge and continued to stand on that ankle with his studs

Dissapointing result but my god did we finally play with passion. Wonderful to see that the team is capable of actually having a spine.
Anything to play for now, they have the advantage and are rock solid at home, but if we go with the same intensity I'll be happy.

As for the red cards, two reckless fouls and deserved.
