fair enough, maybe it was a bit harsh if you read my previous post as wenger not reflecting on the situation at all (and i honestly wanted it to be understood in the context of reflecting and coming to the conclusion that he's hurting the club). i'd still maintain that it would be surprising if he managed to assess the situation objectively (understandably so, don't get me wrong) and for sure there is a certain amount of pride involved that he did not address / listen to his early critics and people he rightfully considers to not have the inside and expertise to weigh in on the situation...
that being said, are you 100% certain that he would never have been sacked? that's hard to imagine honestly, and although you could argue that the fact that many football fans thought it was time for him to leave for quite a while now, and that is proof of your claim, i just can't really believe that pressure from management / ownership / fans / experts / club legends / press would not lead to so much pressure that'd result in his firing if he stubbornly held on to his job and arsenal kept developing like they currently do unfortunately - despite his well deserved legendary status. so i would not be surprised at all if that outlook (or someone outright communicating to him that this might be his future) played part in his decision...
I can understand you completely.
As for the sacking, I really think he would have been able to convince the board to keep on giving him more time. We've had so many low moments and points where he could have been sacked. (remember the plane flying over the Emirates, the 6-0 vs Chelsea, the 8-2 vs United, ...)
That being said, if we for some reason ended up 12th or worse, there would obviously be the possibility that he would get sacked, but at that point I think he would have rather quit himself than be sacked.
He's a stubborn man, that's for sure, but I think even he (finally) knew it was time for him to go even tho he still had a year left on his contract.
