It's odd for a club like Athlethic to have that kind of ego. You know a club like that will have to sell their talents eventually, why not make profit out of it.
I don't wan to sound like I'm hating (because I'm not), but basque people are very proud, and Athletic is very basque in that manner. For most Athletic fans, Javi Martínez's departure has been traumatic, they have a very hard time digesting the fact that there are players who rather play in clubs that are not Athletic. Also, because of their previous glory (they were the best spanish team up until foreigners started to play in La Liga during the 50s, and they won lots of Copas and a decent amount of Ligas), they feel they are as big as any other club, although they are aware that the most they can fight for is getting into european competitions. I've heard many Athletic fans claim if it wasn't because of the TV right's system that favours Madrid and Barça, they'd be at ther level. Basically, they are deluded.
