Former Barcelona coach Radomir Antic believes that Blaugrana superstar Lionel Messi deliberately stayed away from the action during the 1-0 Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid due to his frustration at being played as a winger.

The Argentina international was heavily criticised after running just 6.8 kilometres as Barca crashed out of Europe and Antic has likened Messi's situation under Gerardo Martino to that of Rivaldo under Louis van Gaal during the 1999-2000 campaign.

Van Gaal insisted on playing the Brazilian on the left wing against his will - despite his preference to be deployed centrally - leading to a strained relationship between the two.

"Messi did not do much running because the coach told him to play as a winger. This was Messi's way of saying 'If you want me to play on the wing, I will do just that'," Antic said. "This situation is pretty similar to what happened between Van Gaal and Rivaldo. Van Gaal forced Rivaldo to play on the left and each time he got the ball, he just passed it back to Winston Bogarde.

anyway, it's always a little strange when former coaches / players make such statements but i can see messi doing this on purpose too. wouldn't be the first time he's exploiting his position in the club to bully those around him...
so i don't think this is a really far fetched or unrealistic scenario. you don't have to be able to read minds to interpret certain things...

Well, there is a difference between saying that he thinks something is going on and him saying "Messi did not do much running because the coach told him to play as a winger. This was Messi's way of saying 'If you want me to play on the wing, I will do just that'" as if it was a fact.

I like and respect him, I think his work has generally been underrated, and after all it's no coincidence that he was offered a job by Spain's 3 biggest clubs. But I don't like it when people act like mind readers and say something is going on in someone's head when in reality they don't know jack shit. Antic might be right or wrong, but he's talking about the issue as if he actually knows what's going on, while in reality he's just speculating.

He's doing what the journalists of MARCA, Sport, AS, MD, etc do. Read the minds of CR7, Messi, Iker, Florentino, Tata, etc.

He`s a crap coach, but i think he is actually right on this one.
