That was like 5 years ago. Obviously he doesn't have the defensive qualities of Maldini, but he has improved a lot in that department and is now pretty well rounded.

One of the best things Mourinho did during his spell at Madrid was to teach him how to defend... as he said during his second season at the club "I didn't like Marcelo at all when I joined, but now I'm in love with him".
