First decent opponent and Zidane and his team failed just as miserabely as they would have under his predecessor.

Ofc you can't blame Zidane exclusively... the current state Real is in is just a logical consequence of failed transfer policy due to marketing and politicking, which led to a somewhat unbalanced squad.
Both James and Kroos are great players of course, but their interpretations of a position very similar to Di Maria's (when they won UCL) couldn't be more different. Their lack of stamina and their lower workrates when it comes to defending paired with the lack of an actual CDM foocussing on interceptions lead to a huge weakness in overall defense and stabilty and directly affect their offensive plays as well (simplified: less interceptions --> less effective counter-attacks).

They need a true defensive-minded midfielder to fill one of 2 positions:

- replace Kroos and play behind Modric + James in order to allow them for less defensive work in an attack-oriented 4-3-3 /4-1-4-1:

GK
RB-CB-CB-LB
NEW CDM
Modric - James
Bale - Benzema - Ronaldo

- replace James and act as creative central midfielder, while supporting a deeper-lying playmaker Kroos with his defensive tasks in a more defense-oriented 4-2-3-1:

GK
RB - CB - CB - LB
Kroos
Modric - NEW CM
Bale - Ronaldo - Benzema

one look at the goal yesterday is enough to see that
kroos with absolutely no interest to help the defense
jesus, even with my broken knee i would have caught up with griezmann there

Madrid doesn't like signing defensive players. I've been calling for one for 3-4 years now

That's the result of the marketing and politicking issues I mentioned, yes.

Signing a less spectacular or technically gifted player similar to Makeléle (who was key to the success "los galacticos" had back then) just doesn't bring as much news article notions and outcry as signing an offensive talent. And a player like that would also probably nto sell as many jerseys as Bale or James do, but he could possibly brign back success :)

It's not that we don't have a DM, it's that we don't use it. Casemiro should start almost every game...

Kroos isn't a flop, I really like him, but Madrid doesn't have a Busquets/Lahm/Vidal/Marchisio/Matuidi/Verratti type player.

This.

Kroos could be a key player in any team with his unmatched passing and playmaking skills.
He just needs someone to back him up and suooport him with defensive tasks... Kroos isn't an interceptor... but Pirlo wasn't either and still made a huge impact as a deep-lying playmaker.

Well not if he doesn't play consistently. While he's obviously not on a world class level like Vidal, Mascherano or Busquets, imo he's good enough considering what the market has to offer.

If you can spend 70 mill on James, you can spend 70 mill on 3 of those players.

From the top of my head players that wouldn't be crazy expensive. Ramires(before China ofc), Matic(shit season, could probably grab him for cheap), Luis Gustavo, Kryzchowiak, hell even Javi Garcia.

I know I'm over simplifying it, but Madrid can get any player it wants except for Kun.
