Because Rafa plays the BBC every time and Modric is amazing... which means that only 2 players out of Casemiro, Kroos, James, Isco and Vázquez can make it into the starting XI. Casemiro is almost a necessity for balance (although Kroos is often played in that role aswell), and James is a better attacking option than Isco imo (Benítez also seems to prefer him), so he's having trouble making it into the team.

Personally I'd play 4-4-2 more often, giving some of Bale's playtime to Isco.

I'm happy with him tbh. He can play at a good level in different positions, making him a useful addition to the team. I thought he'd have a minor role in the team, but Rafa likes him and has given him quite a lot of playtime (during which he has performed well).
