You can't compare a RW-> ST and a CM-> CB.

He was originally a LB, no? Has good defensive abilities, look at Mascherano for example.

On the contrary, its stupid to say a player should be played only in the position he was tested in.

Mascherano is a good example for argentina. Arg captain. Liverpool captain. Proven solid midfielder, came to barcelona and became world class cb for 2 years.

Eto`o, barcelona`s no9 for years, proven striker, cl winner, came to inter to be played a (defensive at times) winger. Won cl.

Look at the defenders Barcelona had at the time he was converted.
Meanwhile United have no older players to help a player convert to his position. If Vidic or Ferdinand had stayed I could have seen this work

His main position is defensive midfield, played LB/LWB for national team most of the time

its almost impossible to get a good one today, thats what i am talking about
all top clubs know that good center backs are hard to find and invest in them early+give them good contracts

united totally missed to invest early enough at the right position
instead there are panic signings for the offense.....

a proper def mid is also missing to sweep in front of the defence and get the ball forward
maybe thats even worse than the missing defense now that i think of it

was pretty obvious in the games i watched as well
players like fletcher or carrick (injured atm?) are past it

I believe he first played as LB for Ajax, then later on converted as CDM
