tbf I think the ref's performance last night was ok in the fouls department. At least, with Bayern fouling 5 more times, I wouldn't say that his performance was significant enough to impact on the fact that Atlético performed less fouls than Bayern.
Also, I realized I made a mistake where I said Chelsea made 3 fouls less than Barça in the first leg of semis; it's 3 fouls more. So, I think there's a notable difference there when Atlético is making 5 less and Chelsea is making 2, 3 and a whopping 12 more fouls than the opposition.
The idea was not so much to compare Atlético's fouls with Bayern's, but Atlético's with Chelsea, as they are the ones that have the similar playstyle.
i also think the ref was overall ok and i do agree with a more generous line. i also don't want anyone to misunderstand what i was trying to say: it was absolutely NOT the ref's fault bayern lost yesterday - that's completely on them. i'm just saying that he still sometimes fell for the acting (gabi is the player that immediately comes to mind) and on the other hand denied calls you just have to make - even when you're a generous ref (lewa comes to mind)... so to your point that atlético was "clever" in defending - it is true when you watched the game and analysed what they were doing. just basing it on the number of called fouls and bookings, however, is slightly misleading when you factor in the ref.
then again, i realise now that this is hardly a point you could have made considering who you were trying to explain some football basics - so i guess the stats were the best possible argument you could have made to someone like that who doesn't even watch football and just comes here to troll and hate. not unexpectedly though, he didn't get it... at all...
