It's not specifically Spain. Trade and banking is global - the recession was mainly a result of American banks mal-investing cheap credit from the Fed, yet it had severe knock on effects for most countries. Spain could have reduced the impact if they weren't running budget deficits every year upto 2008, but most Western countries are guilty of that.

Only way to avoid the recession is to do most of your trade with emerging markets like India and China, which is near impossible unless you are geographically close to them.

There is nothing worse in this world to live in the sunny Madrid. 8 hours away from the beach, what a shame.
