Describe the overall benefits that could possibly outweigh a hugely negative effect on the economy? 57% of our exports are to countries in the EU, and 55% of our imports are too. If there was even a slightly higher cost (in money, time or otherwise) in trade or through making trade agreements then it would have a massive impact, considering the scale of goods traded in the EU market.
France, Germany and other leading EU nations would never allow Britain a "pick and mix" approach to trade agreements, and we'd have no say in the new EU regulations that we would have to abide by through trading with EU countries.
So you think they would just cut us off? Because they don't already trade outside of the EU themselves of course?
You're making it sound like leaving the EU would leave us stranded and destitute. If EU wouldn't trade with us, elsewhere would. Without having the added effect of needing to let in hundreds of thousands of immigrants every year.
