Describe the overall benefits that could possibly outweigh a hugely negative effect on the economy? 57% of our exports are to countries in the EU, and 55% of our imports are too. If there was even a slightly higher cost (in money, time or otherwise) in trade or through making trade agreements then it would have a massive impact, considering the scale of goods traded in the EU market.

France, Germany and other leading EU nations would never allow Britain a "pick and mix" approach to trade agreements, and we'd have no say in the new EU regulations that we would have to abide by through trading with EU countries.

So you think they would just cut us off? Because they don't already trade outside of the EU themselves of course?

You're making it sound like leaving the EU would leave us stranded and destitute. If EU wouldn't trade with us, elsewhere would. Without having the added effect of needing to let in hundreds of thousands of immigrants every year.

Very simplistic example: leave EU - > VAT - > more expensive goods -> invisible hand effect

Yet Norway and Switzerland are doing fine.

I assume Dro went to this report for his statistics since it's pretty much copy and pasted.

Britain would gain full control of its own borders - and be able to control, or stop, the flow of migrants from the EU, which accounted for 27% of total net migration in 2010.

2.3 million citizens of other EU countries were living in the UK in 2011, says the ONS.

That should be one of the main points to make. 2.3mill and that was in 2011.

Actually close to the opposite. It may only reduce our trade or legislative powers marginally, but that's all it takes when over 50% of imported and exported goods are in the EU market. Huge risk, huge cumulative effects cascading from small changes.

Just the pick and mix part I read on there, I know all the trade figures. Like I said before, bad immigration policy that doesn't provide enough disincentives for unskilled immigrants is the problem. Remove the incentives and immigration will go down. You don't have to change the whole structure of your standing in the European Union to reduce the number of immigrants coming through your borders, lol.
