The Red Devils' boss was speaking just two days after his side had overturned a two-goal deficit to beat Olympiakos 3-0 at Old Trafford in the second leg, to book their spot in the last eight.

Moyes admitted: "I am thrilled that we were in that draw and the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

"After being 2-0 down after the away leg at Olympiakos, I don't think there were too many people putting us through to the next round.

"So, in a lot of ways, it didn't really matter who we drew but I've got to say we've probably got the favourites and they are the defending champions - so it's a really tough draw."

As for playing the first leg at Old Trafford, he added: "I always think you want to be at home in the second leg and that would be the preference.

"But the way the games are going now, counter-attack football, and teams taking a different approach to playing away, it matters less."

United's passage past the Greek champions came courtesy of a Robin van Persie hat-trick although the Dutch striker left the field on a stretcher with an injured knee.

As for Van Persie's injury Moyes said: "He needs another scan. It's not totally conclusive so we need to check him out.

"All I can say he won't be available for West Ham."

Moyes accepts he has little Champions League experience but is not unperturbed going into a match against the Bundesliga champions-elect next month, saying: "I've had help from a lot of people around us.

"And on Wednesday it meant I could look our supporters in the face after feeling ashamed after other games."

Robin van Persie: Man Utd striker ruled out for four-six weeks

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie will miss between four and six weeks with a sprained knee.

The Dutch international, 30, was taken off on a stretcher after scoring a hat-trick in Wednesday's 3-0 win against Champions League opponents Olympiakos.

Manager David Moyes said an initial scan was "inconclusive" but a second look revealed the extent of the damage.

Van Persie will now miss both legs of United's Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich.

Ahead of seventh-placed United's trip to Upton Park to face West Ham on Saturday, Moyes said he felt he could "look in the face" of home supporters again after beating the Greek champions to reach the Champions League last eight to face the current holders.

The Red Devils are 12 points adrift of the top four - and Champions League qualification - after last weekend's 3-0 defeat by Liverpool at Old Trafford.

"We had given them something to shout about. There was nothing to be ashamed of about our performance," said the ex-Everton boss, who replaced the retired Sir Alex Ferguson last summer.

"In some of the games I have felt ashamed because we haven't played well enough and I have not got a team out that has got a good enough result."

The reigning Premier League champions have lost five of their 14 top-flight matches at Old Trafford under Moyes, winning six and drawing three.

But the 50-year-old Scot, who signed a six-year contract at Old Trafford, is confident United will produce winning performances given time.

"Our form and our performances have not been consistent enough," he said.

"We have shown some really top performances and some really low performances. We have to get better at that, but it is going to take time. We are not going to be able to do everything immediately.

"Because of the period we are in, that is happening a little bit; a very good one and maybe a bad one at times. My job over the coming years is to make sure we get rid of that."

West Ham: Adrian, McCartney, Nolan, Tomkins, Carroll, Taylor, Noble, Collins, Demel, Diame, Downing.

Manchester United: De Gea; Rafael, Jones, Carrick, Buttner; Mata, Fletcher, Fellaini, Young; Kagawa; Rooney.

Swagster finally gets a game, Carrick at cb is not very encouraging though neither is Buttner, anywhere on the pitch.
