Former Mallorca player Cléber Santana died in the crash :(

He was loaned to Mallorca one season from Atlético. He flopped for Atlético, but he performed very well for us... he did a very good job in midfield and he played a key role in the team that season, scoring some really nice goals along the way.

I remember being in the stadium when he scored this great bycicle kick:

Also, this one he scored in Bernabéu wasn't bad either:

It led to a 1-3 win, which is still the last time Mallorca beat Madrid.

Aged 35, apparently he was planning to retire after the Copa Sudamerican final... if this is true then it just makes it even more sad... dying on a flight to the last away game of your career is just...

RIP Cléber, thank you for your services, Mallorca fans have fond memories of you!

They were due to play a final, the final has been called off and the opposing team has requested that the trophy be given to them.

It's a complicated situation and every solution seems bad tbh. Both Atlético Nacional and Chapecoense were really excited about this final... the first team had the chance to finally win the trophy after losing the final twice and also the chance of becoming the first club that manages to win Libertadores+Sudamericana double in one season, while the second club had the chance of winning their first ever trophy. Now nobody wants to play the final :(

I think that, without playing the game, it would be wrong to declare Chapecoense winner... although if the final was confirmed to be completely canceled and not just rescheduled, then giving the trophy to them would be a nice gesture (just not declared champions). If they really had to play it then they will probably have to do what teams did against Torino when they had their crash (their youth team vs Torino's youth team)... but really, I don't see the point of playing this.

Well, I wouldn't want to play this game if I was a player of the other team. I'm sure many feel this way.

Exactly, nobody wants to play it, officiate it, see it, or have anything to do with this game, which is why I don't see the point of playing it. But you know how in football games are almost always played eventually no matter what happens, so I wouldn't really be surprised if CONMEBOL rescheduled it to be played at some point.
