They're all "retiring" so that the Argentinian football association gets renewed..

Ohhhh did the AFA make him miss the penalty?

I hate the way everyone treats him, imagine if Ronaldo did that, Holy fuck there would be a media field day, but as soon as Messi misses (another) one it's "omg I feel so bad for him :( I can't believe he can't win"

Everyone acting like Argentina doesn't have Higuain, Aguero, Mascherano(best player yesterday), Di Maria, Otamendi(great performance too)

Aguero and higuain were more of a liability. Di maria was injured and left the pitch without making any impact. Otamendi was decent.

Argentina is all messi.

Living in Argentina myself, I figured I would leave my two cents on this one.
The issue with his retirement goes beyond his ability to perform.
There is a known problem with him and the national soccer association (AFA in spanish) regarding delayed and improper payments and lack of organization. The whole thing started at least in 2014 with the Wolrd Cup, and has been dragging all along.
Already by Thurdsay, the rumor existed that all this would happen, particularly the retirements, and this will probably affect Martino as well.
As long as the AFA doesn't get its shit together, there is a good chance the guys will not be back. FYI, it is an organization that has been ruled by virtually the same regime since the last dictatorship in 76, and its level of mismanagement, corruption and general disregard for both the people and the players may have reached its peak. By about friday, FIFA had decided to intervene and remove the current leadership, but the local government may refuse that, so who knows.
Back to Messi (I just wanted to provide some context), I can only imagine how frustrating this may be, and as it was pointed out previously, he has always had this issue when playing finals with the team.
Time will tell I reckon.
At any rate, I had the pleasure of experiencing the world championships in 78 (albeit very young) and 86, and it is evidently doubtful I will see one more in my lifetime :P

Absolutely. And most of those players are not well liked by the general population here either.

very interesting and really a shame it is like that to be honest. that being said, if this was the REAL reason for messi's "retirement", i'm sure he would have found a way to voice his discontent internationally and put some pressure on the federation. i mean, as far as i can tell, he DOES have a massive influence on argentinian football: tata martino as a manager? tevez basically banned from the national team? pretty sure that's all messi's doing.

also, while i DO agree that this has to be changed, i'm sure guys like alexis sanchez and arturo vidal would gladly play for their country even if they weren't payed at all for it. if messi's goal was to leverage change, he could have just threatened not to play for argentina anymore if things didn't change...
