Ignorance of the law isnt something you can use. Yes you can hire an accountant but ultimately you are still responsible.

he retired BECAUSE he was facing jail time not the other way around...
and ofc many ppl thought he's such a high profile guy, he'd get away with it, maybe with a really huge fine... but not here in germany...

in spain or italy on the other hand i wouldn't be surprised if there was a way around it. countries where football clubs have their own media with massive influence, where known cheaters (like contador or pantani, not talking about the diver legions here) are celebrated as heroes...

My bad, I meant he had retired as a player.

my point was that imo it's much easier for a player to get away with it than for a manger/coach/president/etc because there are a lot more parties involved

Messi's income only represents a tiny fraction of what Spain brings in per year. Putting him in jail wouldn't even remotely harm the economy (in that regard)


FYI tax tevenues are only 7.26% of Spain's GDP.
