Can anyone help a m8 out here a little?

So I was playing a game 11vs11 90minutes.

One of my players stood infront of one of the other teams players in the penalty area so he couldnt get the ball, and the referee blew the whistle.
We thought they would get a penalty, but no. they got a freekick in our penalty area? The referee said "obstruction" (I think that's the english word)

What about it?

The only reason you could get a freekick in the penalty area is by playing the ball back to the keeper who then picks it up afaik
