Barthez and Dida were mediocre keepers that had 2 great seasons that made people overrate them. The Fernando Torreses of goalkeeping.

Chilavert was great but not among the best imo.

This goal pretty much sums up Barthez with France.

One of the best keepers of the 90s, but not one of the best overall.

imo the 90s were pretty bad years if we look at the keepers. Yes, there were some great keepers, but most of them played for lesser, or at least not the top-top, teams.

Preud'homme played for Mechelen and Benfica
Chilavert for Vélez
Zenga for Inter (which iirc only won 1 trophy during the 90s) and later Sampdoria
Buffon played for Parma

You could even argue about Schmeichel and Van der Saar. Man Utd was a big club in England, but they coudn't compete with the better teams in europe until the end of the 90s; and Ajax was one of the best clubs of Europe for a few years during the 90s, but they weren't during the rest of the time van der Saar spent the there.

Most top clubs had good/decent keepers like Perruzzi, Rossi, Zubizarreta, Illgner, etc; none of them were really outstanding imo. The dominant teams pretty much relied on good defenses.

The only real exception I can think off atm was Kahn at Bayern.

I mean, whenever someoene lists the top keepers of the 90s you often see Taffarel, Barthez and Seaman on the list; it pretty much shows how dissapointing that decade was in terms of keepers.
