If you’re a Premier League player and tend to fake an injury on a regular basis to try and get someone sent off, then you’ll need to clean up your act because the FA are rolling out a new rule starting this season.

From this weekend, players that fake injury to get an opponent sent off will face a suspension of up to three games as the FA plan to clamp down on diving. At the moment, the rule is limited to punishing those who get an opponent sent off and not those who dive to win a free-kick, but we expect that rule to come into play very soon.

For the player to receive a ban, the red card shown to his opponent would have to be rescinded after video footage has been viewed. The suspension will be decided on a case by case basis, which starts at one match.

It's not the first new rule the FA have rolled out after the offside rule was changed earlier this week, which can be read here.

If it's being followed nicely, this would be great

sounds really good in theory but it also sounds like it's incredibly hard to evaluate this consistently and fairly.

when is a player "trying to get his opponent sent off"? does he just have to screams in pain and later continue to play on? does he have to ask the ref directly for a sending off or wave an imaginary card (both of which btw SHOULD be punished immediately btw)? does he have to peek-a-boo with a dirty smile on his face?

and when it comes to judging it by the footage: some contacts look spectacular but don't hurt at all but everyone would think it's justified if a player rolls around for minutes like he's going to die soon.
other fouls are hardly noticable, even in slow motion, and look like accidents. they can still be extremely painful for a short period of time too - so what is the deciding factor for a ban and its length then? being lucky and still able to continue shouldn't be punished and obviously we can't measure if a guy was really in pain or not.

don't get me wrong i'm all for banning gamesmanship and cheating from this wonderful sport and i haven't read the exact rule, i only read what mill wrote in his post but why not make it easier on yourself and punish the things that are obvious to everyone when reviewing the footage? imaginary card waving - ban! dives that are completely obvious (not even those cases where you can say "he didn't have to go down but it was clever, yada yada"), those where there is no contact at all - ban! rolling around on the ground signaling an injury and then miraculously recovering when the ref ignores you and the ball is near - ban!

I'd like to see this in Spain.

And for real in the Eredivisie, allthough it's quite fair here.

there can be a lot of pain without a broken leg or marks.
This one is plain stupid.
They should do a rule for diving alone not stupid shit like this. THe moment you dive without contact = 2 matches vacation.

Shocker the barca fan is displeased with the new rule.

If this was instilled in La liga, Busquets would have played his last game, along with countless other diving barca players.

On topic though, I personally believe it should be the blatant dives.
