SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Chile's star midfielder Arturo Vidal was driving under the influence of alcohol when he crashed a Ferrari in the outskirts of Santiago, police said on Tuesday.

The Juventus player suffered minor injuries in the crash and is being held until Wednesday morning when he'll face a local judge, said Chilean national police Colonel Ricardo Gonzalez.

"The driver of the red vehicle was under the influence of alcohol," Gonzalez said, referring to Vidal and the Ferrari that he was driving late on Tuesday.

The San Luis de Buin hospital confirmed that Vidal was treated for minor injuries in its emergency room. Television images showed the Juventus midfielder leaving the hospital in the back seat of a police car on his way to a station where he was questioned.

Wonder if he will be allowed to play after being charged with DUI and totaling his Ferrari. Just so happens to be IN CHILE, so my best bet is slap on the wrist, no jail time.

Chile DUI law:

From 15 March 2012: 0.03%-0.08% the driver is considered to be driving under the influence and carries a three-month suspension and a fine of US$82-US$410 (as of 19 March 2012); over 0.08% the driver is considered to be drunk and carries a prison term of 61 to 301 days, a fine of US$164-US$820 (as of 19 March 2012) and a two-year suspension for the first offense, a five-year suspension for a second offense, and a life suspension for a third offense.

The question is... How can he get away from jail time?

The law is clear... above .08 it carries a MINIMUM SENTENCE of 61 days, and a MAXIMUM of 301 days. So even if they gave him the minimum sentence, he would still get 2 months in jail. Could get out sooner for good behavior obviously. Maybe half or 1/3 of the time. So we are looking at least 20 days in jail!

My best guess is he was EASILY over .08. Blood work was done at the hospital for sure and that is clear all evidence required to find him guilty beyond probable cause.

I know.. its south america, Chile the country where the player is from and they all probably love him, but still... I don't see how anyone could get away from this specially since its making big news and all. In the middle of the international competition.

Not sure on Chilean law, but some countries (like USA) jail time is given but suspended in lieu of behaving properly for the duration of the sentence (probationary period).
