Sounds like they were trying to make zombies,
I doubt they were targeting any single person, more likely they set parameters to flag w.e information they find interesting, and if it were only 600 they actively, well w.e you get the picture
Unless you have enough money or valuable data to get their attention, I wouldn't be too worried about this specific incident(obviously find out whether or not your computer is compromised and make sure it's not)
You should be more worried that someone is out there forging digital signatures(forging them well), once that cat is out of the bag, we're gonna be fucked for a while
This.
Looks like your typical botnet scenario. Problem being, it's highly unlikely that a back door will be detected until they've actually taken advantage of it and installed malicious shit on your computer. You're not in the clear if a scan comes back clean, is all I'm saying.
Asus will probably roll out another firmware update soon. Keep scanning daily until you've installed the *safe* update and then it'd be good to run weekly scans going forward (which is good practice regardless).
Defender is actually pretty solid as others have said. Microsoft has gotten loads better in recent years with their built in protection.
I didn't bother reading the article, but if they said which update was compromised, you should go in and check manually to see if you've even downloaded that one and if not, turn off automatic updates until they've resolved the problem.
