The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were thought to be a team with decent backup options at safety and receiver this preseason, with the seemingly promising Kevin Ogletree and the unheralded solid backup Ahmad Black presenting the team with valuable depth.
So much for that.
Per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, the Buccaneers have released both players today, during the second day of their bye week.
For Ogletree, his replacement is immediate and direct, as Chris Owusu will take his place on the roster from the practice squad.
For Black, no announcement has been made about a potential replacement. And frankly, he’s the one who needs the replacement more, as the Buccaneers are injured at safety (Mark Barron has a hamstring issue), have a suspension risk at safety (Dashon Goldson), and often use three safeties at a time.
The team may also be in the midst of looking for a true backup strong safety if Mark Barron’s injury is for a prolonged period of time. Sean Baker and Cody Grimm could be the names on the short list.
And according to Rick Stroud, there’s another name to keep in mind to fill Black’s vacated roster spot.
