The Pats just signed Gilmore to some big money so they likely can't afford to give Butler that same kind of contract. Likely more if he had a big game, or if he'd get on the open market.

If they sit him the entire game, it only helps their case for trying to pay him less money so they could keep him. It is a "what have you done for me lately" league after all.
