Biggest needs were WR, Pass Rushing DE >>> CB, Punter > DT/OL depth
FS would of only been a need if we didn't resign Dwight Lowery and we did. So Safety isn't/wasn't a need at all for us.
OK, so you sured up some of the WR issue with Blackmon. Robinson, well, you over paid for a one year wonder but let's play pretend and say the receiving corps is taken care of with those two.
You drafted Branch who had great value at that pick and resigned Mincey. So in our perfect world here, that takes care of the pass rushing DEs.
Corner you took care of with Mathis and Ross most likely being the two starters and the rest providing quality depth so I understand not drafting a corner here over the punter.
I'll give you Punter/DT/OL all on the same level but not punter above the other two.
You say FS is sured up with Lowery but if the second half of the season is any indication of how he'll play this year, I'd be worried.
Here is a quick list of players that were drafted after your punter that fit position of need, have value and would have been better picks than a punter.
Russell Wilson, QB, Wisconsin
Brandon Brooks, G, Miami (OH)
Tyrone Crawford, DE, Boise St.
Jake Bequette, DE, Arkansas
Tony Bergstrom, OT, Utah
Bobby Massie, OT, Mississippi
Christian Thompson, FS, South Carolina St.
Brandon Mosley, OT, Auburn
Zebrie Sanders, OT, Florida St.
George Iloka, FS, Boise St.
Markelle Martin, FS, Oklahoma St.
Andrew Datko, OT, Florida St.
Yes, Wilson would have been a very nice pick to Gabba Gabba because Henne isn't much of an upgrade, if any at all, if Gabbert can't cut it. Wilson on the other hand has the potential to be a starter in this league, and be successful. I know you just picked Gabbert so not ready to give up yet and a QB probably wasn't even a consideration, but I'm tossing him in there regardless.
After that, there are plenty of high powered and talented offensive line pieces all the way down that, some very solid safety prospects and two good pass rushers who would have been worthy of the selection. That list leaves out all of the great receivers still on the board.
You guys could have taken any of those guys and got a punter with your next pick in the 5th with just as much value as Anger. You're right, you probably wouldn't have gotten Anger there, but the difference between the "best" punter and the "worst" punter in this draft (of course, of draftable prospects that is) isn't very big. The difference between the top 3-5 punters is microscopic. We won't be able to tell for a couple of seasons who the best punter of the class is.
All I'm saying is what I've been saying from the start, you could have waited, grabbed an equally talented punter, and bolstered another position with a quality player.
Gabbert can't keep his eyes open, need to have a beef cake offensive line if he's going to be protected.
EDIT: Throw me a bone here. At least say you can see where I'm...we're coming from here lol.
I totally understand addressing a need, but I say it a half dozen times throughout these analysis's, drafting a less talented player at a position of need over a more talented player at a position of lesser need isn't smart and it's proven in the successful franchises. Cardinals have been guilty of it for years. They finally broke out of that habit these past couple drafts.
