My analysis of the game.
They didn't play their best game by far and still came away with the W which is big for this team. Eli played like crap and still had a decent game.
Unfortunately for our running game, they will be in shotgun most of the time with the three receivers they have because no one will be able to cover all three of them especially once Cruz is fully back into it. He looked rusty but still productive. Once he's comfortable on the field we will see him take some of those catches he had and turn them into bigger gains. However, Jennings looked a lot better running out of the gun yesterday. Vereen also looked solid. I think they'll be able to run the ball at will come week 3 or 4.
Eli: As I said, he played poorly but still led the team to victory. I think a change at tight end is needed. Donnell just can't win those matchups consistently enough to be a safety blanket should nothing open up quickly on the outside. Tye is a much more agile player and can win those matchups. That will help Eli. He just needs to limit his bonehead decisions to one a game and they'll be fine. Tye at tight end will help with that.
Jennings/Vereen: Solid tandem that will only improve with the offensive line getting more chemistry together. I really liked what I saw from Jennings especially. He looks much better, carrying over where he left off last season.
WR: Shepard is a stud and can make big plays. Keep him in the slot and he will put up big numbers. Odell is Odell, he will light it up starting next week like he did last year. Cruz looked rusty and will only improve if he stays healthy.
TE: Tye needs to start. I like what Donnell can do down in the redzone but he can't see the field in one tight end sets other than in the redzone.
OL: That hold call on Jerry was horrible and they're still working through some kinks but I love what this OL can be.. We might see Beatty at some point this season at RT or LT which will only help them more even though Newhouse looked a lot better than last season.
DL: I fucking love this defensive line. Hankins and Snacks are absolute beasts in the middle and Vernon and JPP are even better on the edge. I think if it's any quarterback other than Dak they have multiple sacks yesterday. I was worried about Vernon against the run, but he is stronger than anticipated and can stand strong against the run thank god. We will see a lot of sacks this year going forward especially with our revamped secondary.
LB: This unit is by far the most improved on the team. Casillas is a stud and was well deserving of the defensive captainship he was voted. I'm hoping we see Brinkley back in a Giants uniform because I'm still unsure how the middle linebacker position is right now. But there is a lot to like about this unit.
DB: I absolutely love our three safeties. Berhe can fucking lay the wood... and flies all over the field much like Will Hill did. Collins is much improved over last year and Thompson, though injured looked the part. Eli Apple looked strong and DRC and Jenkins played well.
All in all, I think McAdoo puts these guys in positions to succeed much better than Coughlin did. That will help this team immensely. As far as the sacks go, Dak is one hell of a strong quarterback... he held onto a ball that most quarterbacks would've been strip sacked by JPP. And he bounced off Snacks on another. Those are two sacks that would've been with any other quarterback in the league besides maybe Big Ben. I think he will quarterback the Cowboys for a long time which is unfortunate because I really loved him coming out of the draft and wanted the Giants to draft him....
JPP gives you a thumbs up for this analysis....oh wait.
