The Detroit Lions 2011 season began with two big questions surrounding Matthew Stafford: Can he stay healthy through a 16-game schedule, and would he prove himself worthy of being called a franchise quarterback?
The answer was a resounding “yes” to both questions in my book. So where do we as Lions fans go from here regarding Stafford?I suggest we start watching the record books, even though we have to ask xznozx if he thinks hes worthy of even Lions personal records, which I am sure he would agree since our franchise is the dirtiest and worst ever in NFL history.
Stafford is entering his fourth season as a pro, but of us feel in many ways it, that he just completed his first thanks to two frustrating injury-plagued seasons. Stafford is still in the “just getting started” point of his career, but the work he has done so far has given him an impressive start in chasing down Lions’ career passing records.Bobby Layne’s 15,710 passing yards stand as the Lions’ all-time record despite more than 50 years of quarterback play since Layne last suited up in Detroit. Thanks in large part to his 5,038-yard season in 2011, Stafford is almost exactly halfway to Layne’s total, according to pro-football-reference.com.Predicting another 5,000-yard season wouldn’t be prudent given the rarity of the feat(even though I think next year he will hit the 5k mark again, considering he had a broken finger and threw with a glove for 4 games and had the majority of his ints), but Stafford should be able to routinely hit the 4,000-yard mark each season, barring further injury. Ten quarterbacks finished the 2011 season with at least 4,000 yards, and Stafford certainly has the skills and offensive pieces around him to stay in that range going forward.
A reasonable projection is that Stafford will finish the 2012 season in the top five in the Lions’ all-time passing yards leaders list, which would set him up to become the Lions’ all-time passing yards leader sometime during the 2013 season. Shockingly, he would do so at the age of 25.
Stafford is on a similar trajectory when it comes to the Lions’ all-time passing touchdowns record. He is already fifth on that list (tied with Joey Harrington...lmfao). Stafford’s 60 career touchdown passes put him 58 behind the Lions’ all-time record of 118 held by, once again, Bobby Layne. An average of 29 touchdown passes over the next two years and Stafford meets that mark in 2013 as well. Just seven NFL quarterbacks threw for at least 29 touchdowns in 2011, but Stafford’s 41 give him plenty of margin for error in meeting that mark.
If you’re like me you spent a lot of last season holding your breath whenever Stafford got hit. It wasn’t that I was expecting him to get hurt, it was just bracing for the possibility that it could happen again. Just a little bit of worry has a tendency to lessen the overall enjoyment level of a game and Stafford’s overall performance.
The Lions’ big career passing records won’t fall until sometime in 2013 at the earliest, but 2011 showed that Stafford is something special.
The 2012 season represents another opportunity for Stafford to make significant progress toward becoming the Lions’ all-time passing yards and touchdowns leader.
Sit back and enjoy the ride now because it won’t be long before Stafford’s assault on the Lions’ record book is complete, hopefully including a superbowl or 3 in his hall of fame resume upon retirement.

This could help out Suh's numbers this year...
Head coach Jim Schwartz told reporters earlier this offseason that the Lions plan on moving players around their defensive line more than they have in years past.

“We haven’t moved our defensive tackles around a ton … but it can just help some matchups here and there,” Schwartz said. “I think that can help us. We’re an excellent fastball team, but every once in a while a curveball in the dirt doesn’t hurt.”

Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is on board with that idea. Suh has predominantly played left defensive tackle his first two seasons with the Lions, but has been playing more right than he ever has this offseason.

"I've had great conversations with (defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham), really, since we've got back into our off-season training program,” Suh said in an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio this week.

"The great thing about our defensive line is that everyone is interchangeable. I can play left end, I can play right end, I can play left tackle, I can play right tackle. Corey Williams can do everything across the gamut. Lawrence Jackson is the same way. Kyle Vanden Bosch is the same way."

“The offensive line never knowing where we'll be lining up will be, obviously, a threat in its own."

Suh had 30 fewer tackles and six less sacks last season than his All Pro rookie season of 2010. Teams had to account for him, and they did, most of the time with two and three blockers. The Lions are hopeful that moving Suh around a little more this season might free him up more.

Cunningham told detroitlions.com this offseason that he found a couple technique issues he planned to work with Suh on this offseason. That, coupled with moving him around the defensive line, could help Suh regain the form he showed in 2010.

ya hes a risk taker and got hurt, I wanted him to work out but hopefully we end up with a more solid player at his position. On another note we inked the deal yesterday with Reiff ---

It is almost 930 miles from Parkston, South Dakota to Detroit, Michigan, according to Mapquest.com.
Reiff arrived in Detroit last night after driving that distance to sign his name on the dotted line of a new four-year rookie contract. The deal was signed in time for Reiff to join his fellow rookies for their Monday report-date to training camp.
“Just getting ready mentally to start working again,” Reiff said of the drive. “I was just thinking over some stuff.”
Reiff, 23, was selected 23rd overall by the Lions in April’s NFL Draft and is expected to compete for one of the starting tackle spots during training camp. That’s why it was so important for Reiff to be to camp on time.
“It was real important,” Reiff said of getting a deal done. “I didn’t want to miss any time. I thought it was a big part of this whole process to get it done by the time training camp started. I wanted to be here when the rookies reported."
The Lions have coveted Reiff’s versatility and have even left open the possibility of him playing some guard this season.
“I think the great thing about him is his versatility,” Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said of Reiff. “He’s played primarily tackle out here, but I think he could probably play guard if he needed to. But I see him playing tackle for us and we’ll see kind of how it all falls - if he’s a starter from Day 1 or if he eventually takes over. He’s an eventual starter and a long-time starter for us.”
Reiff said he didn’t play any guard for the Lions during the offseason training program, OTAs or the team’s mini-camp in June. He said Monday that coaches haven’t talked to him at all about playing guard, either, but he'd be open to playing wherever the team thought he might be able to help.
Reiff is expected to compete with Jeff Backus and Gosder Cherilusfor a starting tackle spot beginning Thursday when veterans report to camp.

I hope he beats out backusup really. It's been a good run but time he is gone imo. Cherilus isn't much better imo,so if he can play better than either one I would be happy.
