After processing it over the past couple days I actually really love this draft.
I feel like we perhaps could have filled a bigger area of need in the 2nd with some DL studs still available, but I like that we are really going after a run game. Several analysts have stated that Swift will fill a Kamara type role in our offense. For Stafford to have a reliable run game to take some pressure off of him could really open up our offense.
I criticized the Jackson and Stenberg selections as they happened, but after reading some analysis I may have been too hasty with that. John Simpson was available during both of those picks (we actually traded back to select Stenberg and the Raiders selected Simpson with our original pick). I thought he was the better iOL available, but Jackson and Stenberg are both very good pass protectors, so it could work out very nicely.
Cephus was apparently pretty good value in the 5th, although he was the slowest WR who ran in the combine. We definitely need speed on the outside and already have a couple big body/strong receivers in Golladay and Jones, so I don't totally understand the fit, but in the 5th round you start to look at guys you can develop long-term, so maybe we're looking at Jones or Golladay's replacement in a few seasons as opposed to an immediate impact guy.
I love the Okwara pick, improving our pass rush was a must. I thought we could have went after EDGE players a little more aggressively, but Patricia doesn't really emphasize the pass-rush in his defensive schemes, and we definitely bolstered our secondary with the Okudah pick, so I do think we will have improved our abysmal pass defense through this draft.
My biggest criticism of this draft was that we didn't really address the need on the interior DL. Penisini and Cornell figure more as depth guys than guys who can actually compete for significant/meaningful snaps this season. Tbh I don't really expect Cornell to even make the active roster, and I'm not fully confident in Nick Williams. He has had one good season his entire career and he's 30. I like Shelton but we need another strong run-stopper now that we lost Snacks, and we didn't get one.
I imagine we will really struggle to stop the run this season, especially if we lose any of our interior front-7 guys to injury (which is likely).
