Do you see yourself with Minshew in the near future? In the distant future? At what point does it become a full on commitment
It's Minshew's team going forward in my opinion. Dude is making plays/throws that we haven't seen a QB make here since Mark Brunell. All while being a 6th round rookie who had zero practice reps with the guys he was forced into playing with after only 11 plays into the 1st game. It's really looking like we might have found a gem in him.
I think he deserves every chance going forward to prove it. If not now, then when? Do you wait until 2023 when Foles contract is up? That'd be stupid, especially with how hes played so far on short notice.
Foles was just a stop gap QB to begin with. Dudes a 30 year old, often injured Vet. He's reached his peak and that's average at best.
Minshew is just scratching the surface and boy has it been impressive. Give me the 23 year old rookie who clearly looks like he has "it", over the 30 year old who is what he is.
My ideal plan would be for them to try and trade Foles in the Off season. I really don't want the highest paid back up QB in the history of the NFL. Imagine paying a guy $25m per year to ride the pine. Now he'd be nice to have coming off the bench, because he's the ideal back up QB, but certainly not at that price. Try and trade him to a QB needy team for whatever you can get. Will have to eat a little bit of his dead cap $$, but at least we'd get something in return and save some money in the long run.
Minshew should be the present and the future, but I do have a little bit of a bad feeling though.. I think this coaching staff/front office is going to try and get cute and force Foles back into the starting QB role when he's healthy enough, despite what Minshew is doing. They wont want to admit their mistake of out bidding themselves in the off season for Foles. They know they're paying him a lot of money, so they'll try and force him back into the lineup simply because of that.
It would be incredibly stupid, but this staff/front office has made some very stupid decisions in recent years. Really, really hope I'm wrong, but I've been a Jags fan for way too long to know that even though something looks great/is great, they'll find a way to fuck it all up.
But like I said, Minshew is my QB going forward and hopefully the franchise QB going forward for a long time. The dude can flat out play. Again, it's only been 5 games, but my god has he been so impressive considering all the circumstances.
I mean there were a bunch of us who didn't even think he'd make the roster after the preseason because he looked so bad. Hell, the HC himself, Doug Marrone even publicly said that he didn't know if Minshew was even ready to be the back up QB after the preseason lol. Just another example that you can't really trust what you might see during the preseason.
