Conversely, you have the best chance to win with your backup. I figured this is how most people would look at it. You never struck me as a 'glass half empty' type of guy.
I'm a very glass half empty kind of guy.
Our perspectives on sports are very different because as a Raiders fan, I'm expecting to lose. Every win is a cherished event, mostly because I only get 4 or so a year. When you go over a decade without a winning season, the goal isn't "make the playoffs" or "win the Superbowl", it's "win some fucking games, please. Score a touchdown this half. Get 2 first downs in a single drive."
Strategically, if your team is likely to make a playoff run, yes it's better to be weaker against weaker opponents, and at full strength against the hardest teams. But I just want to win some fucking games x_x Even if the season ends with missing the playoffs (which is becoming increasingly more likely as the Chiefs beast out of control) I'm okay as long as I don't have to look at another 5-11 record. During my time watching football, my team has had 4 winning seasons, 3 of which when I was very young and just getting into the sport, 2 of which culminated in a pair of the greatest sports cockings in my life (Tuck Rule, which was just as good if not better than both of the "Was It A Catch" games; and the Grudenbowl). We've had 7 seasons of 4 or fewer wins.
I'm not looking for a champion. I just want a team I don't have to apologize for supporting.
