Why are Giants so successful in October? Tom Coughlin jokes he wants to be 'Mr. October' Quote
EAST RUTHERFORD -- Giants head coach Tom Coughlin and quarterback Eli Manning have become one of the most dominant duos in league history in the month of October, but it doesn't sound like it came by design.
Manning has played 37 games in October during his 11-year career. The Giants are 30-7 in those games, good for an .811 winning percentage. That makes Manning best of any quarterback with a minimum of 20 starts in league history during the month.
Meanwhile, Coughlin added three more October wins to his resume in Manning's rookie season, raising his record to an impressive 33-8, or an .805 winning percentage, during his tenure in New York.
Just for comparison's sake, Kordell Stewart has the second-highest October winning percentage in league history at .800, but he only played in 20 games in the October during his career.
So, what's the secret to the Giants' success in the run up to Halloween?
"Well, I planned that all out for years and years. I wanted to be known as Mr. October," Coughlin joked prior to Wednesday's practice at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. "Reggie Jackson is a good friend of mine. Thanks for bringing that up."
In all reality, in the climate of today's NFL, with shortened training camps and the restrictions on practice time presented in the collective bargaining agreement, it's simply more difficult to have a team ready to play at a high level at the beginning of the year.
Coughlin made that point abundantly clear Wednesday.
"Well, I hope to get better every time you play," Coughlin said. "You want to get better. October comes along a few games into the season and hopefully we're starting to play pretty good. That's what I look at."
After starting the month with an impressive 30-20 win over the Atlanta Falcons Sunday at MetLife Stadium, the Giants head coach and quarterback duo will be tested in their remaining two games in October against the Eagles this Sunday night followed by a trip to Dallas in two weeks.
It's safe to say with the division race tightening in the NFC East, the NFL's self proclaimed "Mr. October" will be tested this time around.
