Giants rookie Odell Beckham Jr. will miss at least another week, Preston Parker to start in place of Jernigan

Quote
It looks like Odell Beckham Jr. will have to wait at least another week for his debut.

While Giants coach Tom Coughlin indicated that the rookie receiver is making progress in his return from a hamstring injury, the coach said Wednesday that Beckham will not see any snaps with the team this week. He will work off to the side.

"He'll be right there learning, etc., etc.," Coughlin said. "But he won't take any snaps."

Beckham has done little since being drafted by the team, limited by a recurring hamstring injury that popped up in the spring. He said last week that he had a "50-50" chance of finally getting into action this week, but that progress is apparently slow.

With Jerrel Jernigan done for the year, the Giants need another receiver to step up and fill in as their third target. Coughlin indicated that veteran Preston Parker will likely get first crack at Jernigan's job.

"He will have that opportunity," Coughlin said of Parker. "He's been in the league. He's very quick."

Coughlin hinted that Corey Washington, the preseason phenom and fan favorite, still has work to do before he's ready for such a role. The coach did not rule Washington out as a red zone option, but he indicated that Washington's main role right now is likely on special teams.

"He's gotta continue to improve as a special teamer as well," Coughlin said. "That's where he can really help us."

BEASON UPDATE
Linebacker Jon Beason (foot) will not practice Wednesday, Coughlin said, but the coach would not rule his defensive leader out for Sunday.

"I wouldn't put anything past this guy," Coughlin said.

It sounds like Beckham is very close, he's doing 100 yard sprints in practice according to beat reporters. We shouldn't need him too much against Houston so another week of rest should do him good.

Preston Parker is interesting.... the guy is crazy fast. He's been making plays and seems to know the offense. Still can't wait to see Corey Washington get the nod but in due time. Coughlin said we may see Corey in the green zone.
Also encouraging about Beason, for him to even be a questionable to play is encouraging.

Tom Coughlin confirmed that WR Preston Parker will get the first shot at replacing Jerrel Jernigan as the third receiver.

Does not sound like Corey Washington is thought of as ideal replacement for Jerrel Jernigan right now.

He's been in the NFL awhile, he's a young-veteran and can get behind a defense.

He can threaten a defense much more than Jernigan can that's for sure and he's 6 foot not a midget like Jernigan.

Jon Beason feeling 'drastically' better, Giants remain optimistic for quick return

Quote
Jon Beason: "I feel like I can go out there and take care of business." Has not ruled out playing Sunday. - via Paul Schwarz & #8234;

Jon Beason is out of his boot and saying he's feeling "a whole lot better." Will visit specialist tomorrow, but not ruling out playing on Sunday. We shall see. That would be a tremendously lucky break for a team who was certain this was a long-term problem.

JPP would be terrific Giants’ tight end: Fewell

Quote
The Giants know all about how defensive end J.J. Watt caught a touchdown pass in the most recent game for the Texans, which is why when the Giants will be in their goal-line defense, coordinator Perry Fewell says “all eyes are on him.”

What about the Giants breaking with tradition and doing the same thing with their athletic defensive lineman?

“JPP, you could probably throw it 5 yards over the goal post and he’d have a chance to go up and get it,” offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo said, referring to Jason Pierre-Paul.

It’s not in head coach Tom Coughlin’s nature to think so outside the box. McAdoo said when he was an assistant in Green Bay, the Packers used defensive linemen B.J. Raji and Mike Daniels as tight ends on their goal-line offense.

“You’re always tempted,” McAdoo said. “I mean, look at those guys. Of course you want to use ’em. We have some talented guys.”

Pierre-Paul is the one defensive player who intrigues the Giants coaching staff.

“I would be all for it,” Fewell said. “I say this to our coaching staff all the time — JPP would be a great tight end. You ought to see the guy run and catch the ball around here. He would be a great tight end. But let’s just keep him on the defensive side of the ball and let’s not put that in his head anymore.”

Top 10 Quarterbacks

Quote
Here are the top 10 quarterbacks this year (after Week 2) as ranked by our overall play-by-play grading and updated during and after our All-22 Review. For all the grades at all positions grab yourself a PFF Premium subscription today.

1.  Matt Ryan (ATL) +5.2

Maintains the top spot on the back of his career performance in Week 1.

2.  Aaron Rodgers (GB) +3.8

OK Week 1, excellent Week 2 as he brought the Packers back to win.

3.  Ryan Tannehill (MIA) +3.7

The controversial one. Already has lost 113 yards in drops which skews his numbers.

4.  Drew Brees (NO) +3.1

It can be argued he did enough to win both games but was let down by his defense.

5t.  Austin Davis (STL) +3.0

Looked extremely competent against Tampa Bay. The question is, as opponents get more film on him will he continue to thrive?

5t.  Matthew Stafford (DET) +3.0

One great game and one incredibly poor one balance out here.

7.  Ryan Fitzpatrick (HST) +2.7

Fitzpatrick has a habit of flattering to deceive early. Texans fans hope this is the exception.

8.  Colin Kaepernick (SF) +2.6

Despite floundering on MNF, was good enough in Week 1 to hold this position.

9t.  Eli Manning (NYG) +2.1

Probably the most consistent of the Top 10. After a rocky preseason looks to be taking to the new offense.

9t. Kirk Cousins (WAS) +2.1 and Robert Griffin III (WAS) +2.1

Matching overall grade for the Washignton duo after putting in 78 and 75 snaps, respectively.

PFF actually knows what they're talking about and actually WATCHES the games.... you can tell.
